Infant brain development

Babies grow so fast in its First Year, from newborns helpless to move independently of under communication. A developmental problem that can be unpleasant to think about is the effect of early trauma on brain development of babies. What is the physical trauma and emotional development of a baby's brain?

Physical trauma

Perhaps the most common form of childhood brain trauma physical is the "shaken baby syndrome" that occurs when a child is shaken and development of the brain rattles back and forth in the skull, causing bleeding in the brain. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a common result of shaking is "subdural hemorrhage caused by the interruption of Small veins that connect transition "part of the brain. A child may be so moved" subdural hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, or both. "

The result of the bleeding is a high rate of morbidity and mortality among the victims of this injury. The AAP reports that "in a series, those children who were comatose when initially examined, 60% died or had severe mental retardation, spastic quadriplegia or severe disorders. Other children initially had seizures, irritability or lethargy, but had no wounds or myocardial infarction, brain tissue. "Shaken Infants who do not receive medical attention may present later with the motor, learning or behavioral problems of unknown cause.

Other injuries

The Babies can not necessarily live a trauma associated with physical trauma. For example, specific events, such as natural disasters or current events, such such as sexual abuse or war may affect the brain development of babies. Because of that trauma is an experience that can affect the victim's age adults. Bruce D. Perry, MD, Ph.D., and colleagues postulate that such trauma affects the central nervous system in a number of ways. One effect is the "fight or flight" in which "factors daily stress can not be raised now before triggering an exaggerated response reactivity. "Children suffering from trauma may be hyper-reactive and overly sensitive. "

Babies suffering from trauma may also have a "freeze" response in which separated as a response to a threat or fear. This "freezing" is a way for children to escape from a situation and retreat to an inner world, to try to find an answer to a threat. These Children may seem insensitive, robotics, or daydreaming.

Perry, et al, report that the duration of response to trauma is influenced by a variety of factors, most important than it seems "the availability of healthy and responsive caretaker to provide support and child-rearing after the trauma." guardians adults can be affected by trauma such as infants, and therefore require treatment and to care for their children. If the guardian is the source of trauma, emotional child survival depends on a security zone that includes true guardians again. "
