Tips for Speed Reading: 6 Speed Reading Myths debunked
There is so much misinformation about speed reading that as more user 30 years, and as instructor of tens of thousands of students from all walks of life and all levels of education, I feel compelled to refute some of the myths common and popular. However, before you start is essential to define what is reading.
Set reading
Although definitions vary somewhat, Reading can be defined as the act of interpreting visual symbols and deriving meaning of symbols (letters, words, etc.).
If one accepts this definition, shows that reading is a cognitive thinking ability. It can therefore be read as fast as we think (or interpretation) of visual symbols. So when someone want to learn speed reading, there is a double problem.
The symbols are faster (the easy part), and obtains the other's mind meet more fast. In short, there are 2 elements to the reading speed, developing mechanical skills to make the eyes move more efficiently, and learn to push the mind to think and react more quickly (listening).
Myth # 1 "It Does not Really Work."
This is true and false. One of my biggest challenges with students is the idea that if they register in a program, then the magic happens. Due to the nature of learning a new system of skills and habits is difficult, the student must fully immersive experience and let go of preconceived notions of what they think of themselves as learners and loosen their attachment to "voir dire, listening, understanding "the habit, they grew up with. What we tell students is:" does not work, you work. "In other words, reading Dynamic speed is a system, a methodology that applies to the act of reading, but readers must resolve and spirit in this process. One technique outside process does not work for all reading situations.
Myth # 2 "Reading About The speed is only Fast Moving Your Eyes"
Wrong. Although historically this is true, and most programs now focus almost exclusively on the speed of eye movements, this statement contradicts the definition of reading as described above. In fact, this is the main cause of cynicism and skepticism towards the concept of reading speed. It is not read if only has to move their eyes and see all the press.
Learning the mechanics without learning the process of understanding is only part of the solution. If someone takes very seriously want to develop their reading skills effectively, focusing on how to build an understanding is essential for success.
I do not recommend software, or other mechanical devices to do so. By definition, can not read as fast as you can think or react to the symbols on the page. Understanding or cognitive skills must be developed.
Myth # 3 "where playback speed to lose," Understanding
A Again, false. While the answer to this question is included in the myth 2, the explanation of the additional need. As I said, keep in mind the principle that you do not read if you do not understand. Empathy means understanding.
The myth that reading speed and comprehension are not all developed countries not only because most programs focus only on speed but also because of the nature of the adult learner is trying to change the habits of a lifetime around.
In general, adult students formed the belief and habit of good understanding, it must begin at the beginning and read word for word from the end in a linear fashion. This belief / habit is formed as a result of learning to read early school days. However, research has shown that understanding is a process. In other words, we must promote understanding as we develop our learning any other skills.
An analogy would be interesting to travel to another state, province or country. You want to start by looking at a map to get an idea general direction of where you are where you want to be. Then you could see the main roads leading there. Finally, it would focus on particular streets, to reach its destination. Experts agree that the reading comprehension, understanding should be built. In other words, it is necessary to "prepare their minds to read."
Another part of the development This myth is the fact the nature of the learning process in developing the skills of speed reading.
As the student works to break the habit of focusing on individual words of a visual and cognitive development, a dynamic flow of light on the stimuli (words) must be made to create meaning faster. In this case, we talk about mechanical skills. The reading speed of a student first enters the development phase, to know first decrease as he / she tries to learn the domain of mechanics.
This can be compared first, learn to drive a car. Remember? You have to focus on managing all the different pedals, buttons and mirrors while browsing this ton of steel down the road safely. If you have been driving for years, not even be able to remember how you felt uncomfortable.
Another good comparison would be to learn a new dance. The learner needs time to build fluency.
Myth # 4 "Speed reading is not simply skimming, scanning, Key-text"
Wrong. Skimming is the reading of the text portion of the sample – one or two sentences here and there, or any other approach. Skimming is good "pre-reading" technique, but not "dynamic speed reading" itself.
Scanning, by definition, is to find a point often hastily, casually, or search for a specific item. We can search the directory telephone number of a particular person, scanning newspaper ads for employment, but not scan a new book, reports, manuals, etc., if we want to control. The test can be used as after reading technique, but not the reading speed.
Number making is an ancient technique of speed reading, where students are told "do not focus on unimportant words, like" A ", "the", "From". This can not be done.
Try it yourself: sit down at someone is in their size and see their faces. While attempts are made to not see his nose. The point of view, the mechanics of reading, is impartial. Or in other words, you can not see anything in his field of vision. His mind can record anything or respond to your eyes see, but that's another matter. In fact, it is again the problem of understanding we have discussed.
Myth # 5 "You can get some results at the end of the program, but they do not last.
This is true and false. Reading is a skill like other skills, if not by some time slower. If you've spent 5-10 years to learn to play the piano and had not touched the piano for 10-20 years, you get rusty. Everything you need, when you've mastered it is sometimes convenient. When you buy a program for searching the long-term support and monitoring.
Myth # 6: "If you look at the readers, of course has really fast Smart People Can Read Speed "
Truth is one of the things that made this intelligent people is the fact that they are voracious readers. They have enjoyed reading. By expanding more comfortable with reading, read more, nicer, more. When you read more, of course, be smarter!
Now that these 6 key is the speed of reading have been explained, what you commit to do to deal with information overload? In the knowledge economy today there is no choice but to learn a new approach to get through the piles.
If you agree to exchange old inefficient habits still dragging around, I encourage you to help from a reputable organization that provides training with a personal touch. Trying to change their habits in the grain is a dual commitment between the student and coach. The software will not. Neither a book, CD, DVD, or try to learn to use free Internet fragmentary sources often have the misinformation and myths well mixed in beer.
In our 30 years of experience, I know this is not a myth to be able to read thousands of words per minute. I know that almost anyone can double, triple, quadruple their reading performance with adequate training and support.
We are delighted to explore their ability to learn this important skill and you can to "control information".
