cloth diapers & wipes: where to start?! which ones?
I am a SAHM and expecting the second baby, DS is no where near being potty trained or showing signs of readiness and I am almost sure I’ll have 2 in diapers. I would like to cut costs by going cloth. I honestly don’t know where to start? I want to start with just the newborn (I’m 26 weeks now) and hopefully (maybe!) by the time he’s born, DS will go potty (he’s almost 2). Which diapers do you like best? (fuzzibunz, bumgenius or gdiapers?) how did you start with this system, and also with cloth wipes? I plan on using small cloth wipes with my own oils in the wipe warmer. Is it best to use cloth diapers with snaps instead of velcro like the one size from small to big? any info will help. Thanks moms!!! oh I also don’t have a sprayer next to toilet, can I use the sprayer from the sink? do I have to spray them? how do you deal after a big poopy one (wipes and diaper)?? sorry I’ve never done this before but really am willing to commit. Thanks again!
Given you’ll have two in nappies, I’m going to suggest a combination system.
For a newborn, the modern styles aren’t that crash hot- get about 24 good quality prefolds and some Thirsties covers. The modern styles tend to leak on newborns.
For your older one, DEFINITELY go with the fancy styles they are so much easier! I’d recommend about three bamboo fitteds with covers for night use- baby Beehinds is my favourite brand for fitteds.
For day use, Fuzzi Bunz and Bungenius are the best brand names- the main difference between the two is fit, one’s slightly better for skinny bubs and the other is better for chubby bubs. I’ve not really used these two brands as they are expensive here ($36 for ONE nappy!) and I can get other brands considerably cheaper!
I’m going to recommend sticking clear of Gdiapers, while apparently they’ve fixed the issue I had with them I’d rather play it safe than sorry and NOT inflict the possible poo horror I had with them on anyone else!
I started out when my son was a newborn with 40 flat folds and a couple of Baby Beehinds covers, as we could afford it I added pockets and all in ones and fitteds. He’s now exclusively in the modern styles. I found I prefer snaps, although velcro is handy to have when you have sitters as a lot of people who haven’t encountered them before get confused by snaps (it took a while to teach my MIL how to do them!)
For wipes I would recommend THIN squares of a fabric with a bit of a ‘nap’ to it so that they grab the poo. I use a solution made of 1 cup chamomile tea (PURE chamomile) with one drop of tea tree oil. Lavender works just as well, but while not quite being allergic to it, I do have issues with it! Make it fresh every day.
As to the sprayer, I don’t use one. I have one which we’ve installed at my mothers place for nasty poos that happen while we are there but otherwise I just shake any solid poo into the toilet and dry pail the nappy.
For a newborn just dry pail the poo ones- it comes off in the machine, for an older child, shake it into the toilet with the good quality brands it should just roll off the nappy.
